The Desktop PC: A New Series from TakeCharge Software

Hello everyone

it is June the 10,2013 and we are starting a new series about the future of desktop software for the PC. When you look on the web there are hundred’s if not thousands of articles discussing whether the time for the Personal Computer is over. With the rise of the tablet and increased functionality of the mobile phone devices, the PC is certainly loosing ground. With that said, the PC still provides important services which have yet to be duplicated by the other media devices.  Services such as;

  • Secure electronic storage of personal information
  • The ability to own as many applications for both personal and business needs as you see fit.
  • Simplified data input system.
  • The ability to create and author information and applications which can be shared not only on other PC’s but also on Tablets and Mobile devices.
  • An open platform for individuals to build their own small business.

It’s no secret that PC’s are vulnerable to personal attack and information stored on them can be at risk. That risk is qualified by the habits and activities of the user. If a PC sits on a desk top and is not connected to other PC’s or the Web then it is safe from attack. The user can purchase applications they need to create and manage their personal information. The information on that PC can then be printed and or  stored on external disk and drives for additional off site storage and safety. For most users, this solution is not practical.

On the other hand, if the user visits unsafe web sites, fails to keep all security services updated, does not use malaware and or spyware applications to protect against attack, then their system will surly be attacked. Most people are now aware of current security needs and good software to use to provide protection against attack.

There are PC’s that fall into both of those extremes, but they are few and most land somewhere in the middle. These PC’s with proper care will provide a powerful utility for managing our information, our work and our life and for those who dream it provides the ability for anyone to develope an idea, create an application others can use, write a novel or simply share their ideas with people all over the world.

What makes the PC unique is, it is by design, an input device; tablets are output devices. Just look at the majority of software on a tablet, it is games, photo managers, media players, book readers and web surfing utilities. All of these provide output for the entertainment of the user. Now, there is a growing list of applications for the tablet and mobile device which provide some input functionality such as bar code scanners, GPS and others. Also business now is getting applications which link data in the cloud to the mobile device and or tablet for use by the user. Where does that data come from? A PC that’s where.

The PC is dead. I say no. The PC platform will evolve, I say it must and it will.

Microsoft recognizes the need for change and has taken it’s first step towards a new desktop for the PC with Windows8©. The HTML5 sliding tiles which loads when the PC starts is an attempt to marry the desktop PC with the web via live streams set by the user. I think it is a great idea. Their tablet with the magnetically attachable keyboard is their first attempt at adding input to the tablet. Another great idea. It does not take a genius to see they believe the two devices will ultimately be joined as one while still having their own separate identities.

This undertaking will look at the PC and discuss possible changes to the desktop software to help it morph into what ever it’s future utility will be. Each writing will look at current aspects of the desktop and decide if they should stay, be modified or go. I hope all of you will follow along and if you want to share your ideas and opinions, they are welcome.
